Nationals Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker welcomes the announcement of additional funding for local councils throughout the Cowper electorate.
The 2017 Federal Budget will deliver additional support to our local councils, with indexation of Financial Assistance Grants to recommence, and a commitment to Roads to Recovery and Black Spots programs.
In addition to these measures, $472 million will be invested in building infrastructure projects across regional Australia.
“These initiatives mean more funds for local councils in Cowper, which means better local services for residents,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“Recommencing the indexation of Financial Assistance Grants will deliver hundreds of thousands of dollars more each year for local councils in our region.
The announcement has been warmly welcomed by the Australian Local Government Association, with Vice President Damien Ryan releasing a statement saying:
“Financial Assistance Grants are an important untied payment that councils invest in providing better infrastructure and better services for our local communities. By restoring indexation to this important payment, the Government is honouring its commitment to communities to ensure that, as far as possible, every citizen regardless of where they live can have equitable access to municipal services.”
“Councils will also have an opportunity to apply for funding to support specific major projects through the $472 million Regional Growth Fund. The fund will include an additional round of the Building Better Regions Fund and funding for economically transformative projects worth more than $10 million.
“The Government has also renewed its commitment to the Roads to Recovery program, with $1.86 billion in funding. Roads to Recovery is already funding millions in important local road upgrades in Cowper, and I am certain this additional funding will be put to good use throughout the electorate.”
