Coalition provides more support for education, childcare and housing affordability PDF Print E-mail

November 14, 2007

Working families in the Federal seat of Cowper will benefit from an increased investment in education, child care and housing affordability, The Nationals Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, said today.

Mr Hartsuyker said a re-elected Coalition Government will provide a tax rebate for education expenses of up to $800 for secondary students and $400 for primary and preschool students.

“This tax rebate will apply to a wide range of education expenses, including schools fees, text books, uniforms, camps, excursions and computer equipment. The rebate recognises that education begins before school and the importance of early childhood learning.

“The assistance will be delivered by providing a tax rebate of 40 per cent of expenses up to a maximum of $2,000 per secondary student and up to a maximum of $1,000 per student in primary or pre school.”

Mr Hartsuyker said a re-elected Coalition Government will also provide more support for families which require child care. Currently a rebate of 30 per cent of out of pocket expenses is paid up to a value of $4,354.

“A re-elected Coalition Government will pay the family childcare tax rebate in advance to the childcare provider, ensuring fees are reduced before parents pay,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“This will cut the upfront costs by 30 per cent and will assist the week to week family budget.”

Mr Hartsuyker said the Prime Minister had also announced additional support for first homebuyers.

“A re-elected Coalition Government will introduce a tax-free home savings account for all Australians who have yet to own their first home.

“Contributions of up to $1,000 a year will be tax deductible and all interest and earnings from the accounts will be completely tax free. For Australians aged 18 and over, a maximum of $10,000 a year can be contributed to the account.

“The Coalition will also look to make contributions to the account from future Budget surpluses.”
