Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, today joined the Kempsey community in launching a campaign to redevelop the Kempsey Hospital from the Australian Government’s $10 billion Health and Hospital Fund.

“In my view the redevelopment of the Kempsey District Hospital has to be a priority,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“Although the administration of public hospitals has historically been the responsibility of the State Government, the Prime Minister has professed that the buck stops with him on health.

“This new $10 billion fund provides all levels of government with the opportunity to work together and ensure Kempsey Hospital is upgraded.

“The Kempsey Hospital Action Group has previously written to the NSW Minister for Health, forwarding a master plan for the hospital’s redevelopment.

“Following the announcement of the $10 billion fund I wrote to the Federal Minister for Health calling for the Kempsey Hospital redevelopment to be made a priority. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health responded by directing the community to the NSW Minister for Health.

“Given Kevin Rudd’s prophecy that the ’buck stops with me’, I believe a rejuvenated campaign is required to get both the State and Federal Governments to recognise Kempsey Hospital as a priority.

“The NSW Minister has had a copy of the planned master plan for the hospital’s re- development for two years.

“We need to get the NSW Health Minister, Reba Meagher, to revisit the master plan and make Kempsey Hospital a NSW Government priority when they seek funds from this $10 billion fund.

“I will also be forwarding details of the hospital master plan to the Federal Minister in Canberra.
