The Clarence Valley fishing industry has been dealt a cruel blow, following confirmation the SeaNet programme has been axed by the Rudd Government.

The Nationals’ Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, said SeaNet, which provides the vital link between scientific research and the fishing industry, has this week been officially axed.

“OceanWatch, which provides the scientific research for the SeaNet programme has been formally advised that their funding has been cut,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“At a time when the cost of diesel makes it essential that fishermen get the maximum yield out of their catch, this decision by the Rudd Government is a slap in the face for the local industry.

“The Member for Page Janelle Saffin and the Rudd Labor Government have turned their backs on the industry when it’s in its greatest need.

“SeaNet worked with the fishing industry to minimise the catch of non target species and to encourage environmental best practice for industry.

“The hypocrisy of Ms Saffin’s environmental and economic credentials is now very obvious. One should never look at what Labor says - but rather what they do.

“Ms Saffin has abandoned those she represents on petrol prices and she is now a part of a government which is hanging the fishing industry out to dry.”

The CEO of OceanWatch Anissa Lawrence was critical of the Rudd Government’s decision.

“SeaNet is a vital part of the fishing industry’s infrastructure,” Ms Lawrence said.

“It is very disappointing to see a government that does not support sustainable fishing and protecting the environment.”
