Petition calls on Rudd Government to reinstate funding for CrocFest in Kempsey
March 5, 2008
The Nationals Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, today launched a petition which calls on the Rudd Government to reinstate funding for CrocFest.
In recent years Kempsey has hosted a Croc Festival which promotes indigenous culture, educational and healthy living programs.
Mr Hartsuyker said the Rudd Government’s decision to cut funding for CrocFest was a slap in the face to both local indigenous people and the broader community.
“Croc Fest is an important event which engages with students, helping to get them to attend school, thereby raising self esteem and promoting the benefits of healthy living.
“Kempsey will feel the pain of these funding cuts more than most. I understand it is very unlikely that any CrocFest will be staged in the Macleay which will impact on the hundreds of children and teachers who have been involved each year.
“After discussions with school and community representatives from the Kempsey Shire I have decided to launch a petition on this issue.
“It is important that Prime Minister Rudd knows the impact his government’s funding cuts will have on the students in the Macleay Valley.
“I intend to table the petition in the Federal Parliament in the first sitting week after the Autumn recess.
“I invite local teachers and parent bodies to get behind the petition and send Mr Rudd a clear message.”
Mr Hartsuyker said the petition will be initially circulated through schools in the Macleay Valley but would be provided to schools from other areas who request copies.
