Negotiations set to commence for new CT scanner and ultrasound machine at Kempsey Hospital
February 21, 2008
The installation of a new CT scanner and mobile ultrasound machine at Kempsey Hospital is one step closer with the Federal Government confirming that negotiations between the Commonwealth and State Government will shortly commence.
The Nationals Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, today said he had received advice from the Government that the Federal Department of Health and Ageing will soon commence negotiating a funding agreement with the New South Wales Government.
“In December I wrote to the new Federal Minister for Health Nicola Roxon reminding her of the Labor Party’s election commitment for a new CT scanner and ultrasound machine at Kempsey Hospital. This commitment had the bipartisan support of the Coalition.
“I sought advice from the Minister as to when Kempsey Hospital could look forward to the commissioning of this equipment,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“The CT scanner is a vital diagnostic tool which is important in the treatment of head, chest and cardiac conditions. The portable ultrasound machine will provide improved access to such services, particularly in the hospital’s emergency department and obstetrics unit.
“Because of the important services these machines provide, it is essential they are installed without delay.
“Following my representations I have now received a response from the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing, Jan McLucas.
“Ms Lucas has advised me that officers from the federal department will be in contact with the relevant health authorities in New South Wales ‘in the near future’.
“Given the need for the equipment this is welcome news. I will continue to pressure the Government to ensure this equipment is delivered as quickly as possible.”
