Hartsuyker presents anti whale slaughter letters to Federal Minister Peter Garrett
February 21 2008
The Nationals Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, this week handed over 7,200 letters which opposed the slaughter of native humpback whales to the Federal Minister for Environment, Heritage and Arts, Peter Garrett.
Mr Hartsuyker, who last week took receipt of the letters from Peter Bruce at Coffs Harbour’s Spirit Cruises, presented the boxes to the Minister at Canberra’s Parliament House.
“I welcomed the opportunity to highlight to the Minister the depth of feeling local people have in respect to killing whales,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“The Minister was clearly appreciative of this effort, and was quite surprised at the number of letters,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“Australians are rightly disgusted about the slaughter of whales in the Southern Ocean and these letters, which were collected in just two days, highlight how people on the Coffs Coast feel.”
“I congratulate Mr Bruce on his achievement in collecting such a large number of letters in so short a time.”
