Luke launches local campaign to increase blood donations on the North Coast
May 29, 2009
Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker today launched a local campaign which calls on North Coast residents to donate blood.
Mr Hartsuyker has filmed a 30 second commercial which highlights the importance of donating blood – particularly at this time of year.
“With the arrival of the cold and flu season, bloods stocks usually drop off,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“This television commercial aims to encourage more people to consider donating blood and it is timed to coincide with the winter period when there are less blood donations.
“Donating blood is one of the best things you can do. You can assist those in need and in many instances help save lives.
“One in three people will require a blood donation during their life but only one in 30 people actually donate. Thirty per cent of all donated blood goes to cancer patients whilst around 12 per cent is used in trauma situations.
“If we can increase the number of people who give blood, the Red Cross will be in a better position to meet demand. And you never know when someone you love will need the blood.”
“Donating blood is easy – all you have to do is phone 13 14 95 or log on to www.donateblood.com.au for more information.
During the launch of the promotional campaign, Mr Hartsuyker also presented a Federal Members Award to Nambucca Heads resident Noelene Denniss.
“Over the past 40 years Noelene has donated blood more than 220 times. This is an incredible achievement and I am delighted to present her with this award. We need a lot more Noeleen Denniss’ on the North Coast.”
