Taxpayers should not fund The Chasers offensive skits - Hartsuyker
June 5, 2009
Taxpayer funding should be withdrawn from the ABC’s The Chaser’s War on Everything following their skit on terminally ill children, Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker said today.
Mr Hartsuyker said whilst politicians were fair game for the show, there was no room for distasteful low acts, as was screened on Wednesday evening.
“The Chaser has crossed the line of common decency.
“Trying to make comedy out of the plight of the innocent victims of terminal disease is clearly unacceptable.
“If The Chaser team can not fill their programs without sinking to the depths of bad taste, it is clear to me that the taxpayer should not be funding their disgusting skits.
“There was no regard for those families who have suffered the loss of a child or for those who are currently caring for a seriously ill child.
‘Taxpayers have every right to expect that funding to the ABC is used to air content that is diverse and of a high standard.
“Given last Wednesday’s program, one has to ask whether the ABC has appropriate checks and balances to sure such offensive material is never screened.”
