Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker today supported a move to establish direct flights between the Coffs Coast and mining areas in Western Australia.  Mr Hartsuyker was commenting on reports that management at Coffs Harbour Regional Airport were investigating the concept.

A targeted survey which was recently completed of 300 workers in the Coffs Harbour and Clarence areas found that half worked in Western Australia and a third in Queensland.  Given there are already hundreds of local workers employed in these mining regions on a fly in – fly out basis, I would welcome any move which strengthens the links between us and the mining centres. It would substantially reduce travelling times which could realise additional opportunities.

“Skills shortages remain a major problem for many mining projects so if North Coast residents can meet that demand for labour I believe it would be a win –win for all parties.  Certainly fly in-fly out arrangements eases the demand on services and infrastructure in many of these boom regions but it can also be great for non mining regions such as the NSW North Coast.  Certainly in the current two speed economy, having direct access to Western Australia could also present additional employment options for local families.

“The fly in-fly out option would give local workers the chance to earn good money but still remain a North Coast resident. Such a direct air service would also serve to make our region an attractive place to relocate to. And having a flight schedule which links our mining areas to the Coffs Coast could also be good for tourism.”

Mr Hartsuyker said he had discussed the issue with management at the Coffs Harbour Regional Airport.  “I have certainly offered my support to this initiative and trust that mining companies and airlines can see the benefits of creating these new air routes.”
