Hartsuyker welcomes new Shadow Ministerial responsibilities
September 14, 2010
I welcome the opportunity to serve the Coalition as the Shadow Minister for Regional Communications, Youth and Sport and continue my duty as the Deputy Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. We can deliver enormous opportunities for regional Australia if we get our communications – and in particular our telecommunications - policies right.
It is essential that the Government delivers regional telecommunications which is affordable to consumers and cost effective if taxpayers are expected to fund its provision. The Government must ensure broadband services are adaptable to new technologies and responsive to the needs of the marketplace.
It is essential that Governments deliver what is economically sustainable and technically acceptable to both consumers and business.
I look forward to holding the Government to account in delivering more advanced communications in regional Australia and realising the potential of vibrant and dynamic sector.
I also look forward to working with sporting and youth bodies to harness the tremendous talent and enthusiasm our nation has for sport and recreation.
In many cases there is a cross over between youth and sport. Encouraging young people to participate in sport is one of the best things we can do. The Government must ensure grass-roots sporting organisations are recognised in a deserved way.
Australia’s huge appetite for elite sport is also important to the very fabric of our nation. The Coalition looks forward to working with state and national sporting bodies. We will ensure we hold the Government accountable in keeping our domestic sporting competitions strong and that Australia continues to punch above its body weight on the world stage.
As a Member of Parliament, I am very conscious of many of the issues affecting young Australians. Many of these matters cross over numerous portfolios. I look forward to meeting young Australians from the across the nation and working with them to ensure the Government implements policy which gives our next generation the best opportunity in life.
