Mid North Coast to Benefit From a Fairer & Simpler Welfare System

03 Apr 18

Nationals Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker, said the welfare system would be fairer and simpler for everyone on the Mid North Coast after the Welfare Reform Bill passed the Senate last week.

“The Coalition Government has delivered a significant reform with the passage of the Social Services Legislation Amendment (Welfare Reform) Bill 2017 that will ensure Australia’s welfare system is fair, sustainable and continues to provide support to those most in need,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“Welfare reform is essential to ensure Australia has a welfare system that is equitable and financially sustainable for future generations.

“The legislation introduces a new compliance framework that will provide additional help for genuine job seekers, and also strengthen penalties for people who do not meet their mutual obligation to look for work and engage in the job-seeking process.

“The economy is creating over 1,100 jobs a day and the Coalition Government wants a welfare system that encourages people to take advantage of this opportunity by looking for work and finding a job.”

The legislation also:

• Creates a new single JobSeeker Payment that will progressively replace or consolidate seven existing payments between March 2020 and January 2022. More than 99 per cent of people will have no change to their payment rates.

• Removes drug and alcohol dependency exemptions and stops job seekers who are not willing to seek treatment from repeatedly using this as an excuse for missing mutual obligation requirements.
