Conroy Backs Down on NBN Health Benefits
September 8, 2011
Labor‟s $50bn National Broadband Network continues to unravel with the revelation that those on the basic package will not have access to on-line consultations with doctors, said Shadow Regional Communications Minister Luke Hartsuyker today.
“Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has continually touted the health benefits of the NBN, particularly in regional areas, as one of the justifications for the scheme,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “In December, he said in a media release: „Under the NBN every home, doctor‟s surgery and hospital will have access to affordable high speed broadband…telehealth will allow people to have treatment where they feel most comfortable….By delivering health services to the home, older Australians with chronic conditions will be better able to manage their health through ongoing monitoring and care with primary health providers.‟
“Now Senator Conroy has admitted this is wrong. According to The Australian, he and NBN chief executive Mike Quigley have admitted that high definition video consultations with doctors would not be possible on the NBN‟s cheapest plan.
“Doesn‟t he realise that the older Australians he referred to are precisely those most likely to be on the cheapest plan because their incomes are limited? Doesn‟t he realise that incomes are generally lower in regional Australia, where this service is most needed, and where there is likely to be a relatively higher take-up of the cheaper plan?
“I have asked Senator Conroy to provide regular updates on NBN take-up and he will not provide me with those figures. The reason is clear. As the harsh light of reality shines on the NBN, it is revealed as a costly con-job, as it has been with regard to on-line consultations.
“Signing up to the NBN is like signing up for a cruise with packages from $500. You find out that for $500, you‟re confined to a cabin between the engine room and the disco. You‟re on board, but you‟re not getting any of the benefits you expected.
“The reality is that the NBN will deliver more expensive broadband, not cheaper broadband.”
