Communities in regional Australia concerned about the conduct of telecommunications providers have until November  25 to comment on the industry’s proposed new code of conduct, Shadow Minister for Regional Communications, Luke Hartsuyker said today.

“The draft Telecommunications Consumer Protections Code covers a range of issues, including consumer sales and service, billing, credit and debt management, and complaint handling,” Mr Hartsuyker said.   “The Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman received almost 60,000 complaints in the first three months of 2011, so there is obviously a need to improve the monitoring and behaviour of some providers in the telecommunications industry.  This new code of conduct will govern how telecommunications providers interact with consumers and will be enforceable by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

“I encourage anyone with concerns about how phone and internet providers deal with the public to read through the draft code of conduct, and make a submission on how the code could be improved to better protect Australian consumers.   The code can be downloaded from the website of the Communications Alliance at www.commsalliance.com.au.
